I often say that when you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meagre and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science, whatever the matter may be.“我经常说，当你可以测量你说谈论的事物时，当你能用数字来表达它的时候，你才能对它真正有所了解; 而当你无法测量它，也无法用数字来表达它时，你的知识是贫乏而不令人满意的；不能进行定量测定的思想，或许是知识的开端，但无论如何，这样的思想还没有发展到科学阶段 。
